Question Six: What Musher Will You Choose?

What qualities and characteristics are important for a good musher to have? Who would you choose to follow along the Race on March 7? 
- Write a biographical paragraph on the person you choose.
- Tell his/her background and what led them to race in the Iditarod.
- Tell why he/she makes a good musher (dog training, care)
- Lastly, give reasons why you chose this person.
You will follow your musher throughout the Iditarod.

Question Five: What Makes A Good Sled Dog?

You're thinking about entering the Iditarod Race. Choosing the right dogs will be a critical factor in how well you do in the race. The dogs love to pull and work hard. They want to be on your team. Find out what it takes to be chosen.
How were sled dogs used in Alaska's history?
What traits should dogs have to be a 'superdog'?
What breeds are used mostly and why?
What type of coat is best?
What kind of training would they need in order to be prepared for the race?
What happens to dogs who are too old to race?

As we move on in our quest to learn all we can about the Iditarod let's look at its history. You all know about the Serum Run and it's worth mentioning but how about researching some of the following:
What does the word 'Iditarod' mean?
 Explain the reason why it started in the first place (and when).
Why is Joe Reddington, Sr. considered the 'Father of the Iditarod'?
Why does the race alternate between a northern route and a southern route every year?
What is the 'Red Lantern' award?
Who are some of the more notable past champions of the Iditarod? Were there any multiple winners?

Question of the Week

Alaska is the last wild frontier. Let's learn about the geography of Alaska and the Iditarod trail. Facts you've never known before!

Research the geography of Alaska using books and the Internet. Guiding questions:
What does it look like? What's unique about it?


Write a catchy, colorful description of your findings which may include: Alaska's location, size, landscape, climate, weather conditions, and any other significant features.
